Symmetry

concept             measure of beauty           phenomenon

which is present in

Universe              and                 nature

Science    and      art

The term “symmetria” comes from ancient Greek. The prefix “sym” refers (common) and the noun “metros” refers (measure). The Greeks interpreted this word, as the harmony of the different parts of an object, the good proportions between its constituent parts. Later this meaning was transferred to e.g., the rhythm of poems, of music, the cosmos ('well-ordered system of the universe as contrast of chaos').In wider sense, balance; equilibrium belonged also to this family of synonyms.

The nature is nearly symmetrical. It is everywhere, but generally we are not aware of this beauty because everything is ordinary for us. Why? The reason is that even though we look at the phenomena we cannot see what goes on. We don’t critically think and analyze the events that continuously take place around us.

The Amazing Range of Symmetry

The key point to understand is that symmetry is not simply to do with architecture and pretty patterns. These are only two visual manifestation of symmetry. In fact, it is impossible to do justice to the range of symmetry. The concept is all pervading, all unifying, and all powerful. It unites science, art, nature, philosophy as nothing else does.

Herman Weil, one of the greatest mathematicians of modern times, expressed this fact when he remarked:Symmetry establishes a ridiculous and wonderful cousinship between objects, phenomena and theories outwardly unrelated: terrestrial magnetism, woman's veils, polarized light, the theory of groups, structure of space, vase designs, quantum physics, scarabs, flower petals, X-ray interference patterns, cell division in sea urchins, equilibrium positions of crystals, Romanesque cathedrals, snowflakes, music, the theory of relativity...
